La Novella Orchidea

An eBook, a comic book and an audiobook for February

This leap February is coming to an end, but there is still time for those who love special reading to throw in a new eBook. And why not add something else? Here then is a short story, a comic book and an audiobook for February.

Liutello: how luthiers can be good and evil

If the lute and lute-makers are somewhat the author’s metaphorical nemesis, then ‘Liutello’ is the literary transposition most faithful to this credo. The short story unfolds of the journalist De Giornalis, in marital crisis and with a* lover, who goes to the home of Orgaio degli Orgaioli for a memorable interview. But the occasion will turn into a real case, when the story told by Orgaio (and his wife, who has suddenly appeared) will make De Giornalis even more doubtful not only about what to write, but about his own life!

The ending, as often happens, is bittersweet. On the one hand, the journalist will find what he was looking for without realising it, and on the other, on his return home, he will discover that all bad things come to harm… Between failed luthiers and luthiers who didn’t know they were luthiers, there is only one certainty: it is never too late to change your life and to go back, but never with the same certainties.

Fabia Claudia and Claudia Fabia: when historical comics become erotic

Needless to go round and round: ‘Fabia Claudia and Claudia Fabia’ is perhaps one of Ricardo Tronconi’s most ‘racy’ short stories. What happens, then, if the author decides to make a comic strip out of it? It is quickly said: ‘Fabia Claudia and Claudia Fabia’ becomes the best-selling work, because nobody can resist the explosive mix of two beautiful cousins and history. It all starts in a Roman camp, with a proconsul besieging a Gallic town, Alesia. Guess what, it is indeed Julius Caesar, here in the unprecedented guise of mentor and advisor to one of his spies, Poppaeus, skilled in secret jobs, but less so in bedroom work.

And so we are presented with the disturbing and bewitching beauty of Fabia Claudia and Claudia Fabia, comely cousins who become brides of the faithful spy. But work beckons and the trio infiltrate the enemy camp and try to do their bit. But history, you know, follows a flow all its own and events follow one another heedless of these little adventures. Poppeo’s life, however, changes forever, and the spy discovers, once again, that women know far more than any secret agent…

Aniel Day: if interstellar space becomes personal (intimate) space

The audiobook of the month is one of the most recent in our series. Once again, you can find the author’s favourite themes, the liut… (not this time), pain therapy, space and time travel and, above all, Adam and Eve and the question of free will. Because, let’s not lie to ourselves, everything always revolves around these two fairy-tale, mythical characters, who gave birth to our existential mess. Here then, the Buccaneer spacecraft sets out to travel and spy on the two good guys Adam and Eve, this time in a rather peculiar version. While the historic event takes place (which will have a totally unexpected outcome), on Earth someone struggles to make objecting doctors understand what unbearable pain means, with an ingenious device that passes the patient’s pain to the doctor. Will it work? Enjoy listening!
